Retire from touring ...

When does an artist decide to go from touring to residency?

Artists are setting up residences at venues throughout America. In Las Vegas, shows by Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Garth Brooks, Jennifer Lopez, Reba McEntire, Lady Gaga, and Elton John have attracted sold-out shows. Lady Gaga announced a two-year engagement at the MGM Park Theater mid-2019, and according to sources, Lady Gaga is guaranteed just over a $1 million per show and is committed to 74 appearances. For the artist, it is more comfortable as everything is in 1 venue, less traveling and the fees to perform at the location are set. Tickets to a Jennifer Lopez residency show at the Axis Planet Hollywood ranged from $54 to $412. A current three-night bow grossed $2.1 million, with the venue at 90% capacity and 11,408 in attendance.

But when should an artist consider the residency as a better option?

Madonna mentioned 'I want to reinvent pop tours' in 2017. The Rebel Heart tour did not go so well with fans paying top dollar to attend her show.

In 2017 while kicking off her first Australian shows in 23 years, Madonna, lived up to her reputation as a diva, arriving four hours late in the wee hours of March 11. But in true Madonna style, she told the agitated audience to: "Just come late, and I won't have to come early." In England, she called the crowd "diva bitches" when they booed her lateness.

Early in 2019 several shows, Madonna was openly grieving for her 15-year-old son Rocco, who was in an ongoing custody stoush with her ex-husband Guy Ritchie. Madonna openly drank onstage, claiming it was something “I haven’t done before” and speaking about her heartbreak. “I miss my son so much,” she told the crowd. A night later at nearby Rod Laver Arena, Madonna engaged in wacky antics and shared a swig from a hip flask with a front-row concert fan.

As recent as the week of January 27th, 2020, Madonna had to cancel a concert, her second in a week, on her Madame X tour in Lisbon on Wednesday.

The 61-year-old has attributed her past cancellations due to injuries and illnesses.

In a video posted on January 28, 2020, Madonna is seen clutching a cane and limping up a series of stairs. "In Lisbon where Madame X began her journey.......thank goodness for my beautiful Vintage cane and most of all thank you to Dino and Victoria and all the amazing Musicians who showed up," she wrote on Twitter.

Madonna has canceled ten tour stops, citing injury, medical reasons, and production reasons as to why those particular shows could not go on.

Perhaps 'Madge' should consider a residency.
